Andrea Harrington Wins Dem Primary For Berkshire District Attorney

In Berkshire County, Massachusetts, Andrea Harrington is on her way to being the new district attorney. That's after she beat two other candidates in the Democratic primary, including the current DA.

Harrington beat Paul Caccaviello, who was appointed to the job earlier this year.

Former DA David Capeless retired in March and convinced Governor Charlie Baker to give Caccaviello the job. Capeless said he left early to give his former first assistant a chance to run as the incumbent.

The moved raised some eyebrows, and Harrington thinks it was a factor with voters.

"I spent a lot of time knocking on doors and talking to voters -- and absolutely, voters want to have free and open elections. That was a common theme," Harrington said.

Harrington ran on a platform that called for more treatment and diversion programs for offenders.

She said she'll chat with Caccaviello about the transition, but when asked Tuesday night about the fate of current staffers in the DA's office, she said she had to go, and ended the interview.

With no Republicans or others declared, Harrington likely will be unopposed in November's general election, giving her a clear path to the office in January.
