A Connecticut grocery chain has announced it will open a new store in Adams, Massachusetts, later this month.
Coincidentally, the chain is already named Adams Hometown Market.
The company said it will purchase the former location of the town's only grocery store. Big Y closed its store in Adams last week after three decades serving the town, citing issues of size.
Town Administrator Donna Cesan said the community is excited for the new business.
“People have been going on to the grocery’s website and looking and talking amongst themselves,” Cesan said. “I would have to say the response has been very, very positive.”
Big Y employed over 90 people in Adams, and Adams Hometown Market's Russ Greenlaw said his company plans to hire most of those workers.
“We fully expect to be a solid employer in the town of Adams for quite a bit of the time to come,” Greenlaw said.
Adams Hometown Market runs 15 locations around New England and New York.
The company is working aggressively with town officials to open on March 28. Until then, the town's Council on Aging will continue a free shuttle service to the Big Y in neighboring North Adams.
