Net revenue at the first casino to open in Massachusetts was essentially flat in the first quarter of 2017 compared to last year.
The total at the Plainridge slots parlor from January to March was roughly $38 million. The information was presented Wednesday at a meeting of the state gaming commission.
"We're down about half a percent year over year," said Plainridge CFO Ruben Warren. "We had double the snow events in 2017 versus 2016. And of course, we all know the Patriots are five miles down the road. They had a great year. And playing on Saturday and Sunday affected business as well."
Although, that excuse ignores the fact that the Patriots made it nearly as far in the playoffs the year before.
Meanwhile, UMass Amherst just released a report on the workforce at the Plainridge Casino. It shows that half the employees were either unemployed or working part-time before they got jobs at the slots parlor.
