Should Mass. Transportation Secretary Resign? Lawmakers Not Sure

Two western Massachusetts lawmakers agree the Registry of Motor Vehicles deserves some blame for a recent fatal car accident in New Hampshire. But they stopped short of calling for the resignation of the state transportation head.

Authorities said the driver in the New Hampshire accident was Volodymyr Zhukovskyya of West Springfield, who was arrested for drunk driving in Connecticut earlier this year.

State Senator Adam Hinds said the RMV has taken responsibility for failing to suspend his license, and for failing to monitor other out-of-state violations.

RMV head Erin Deveney's resignation was the right thing to do, Hinds said. But he added he’s not sure if Deveney's boss,  Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack, should also go.

“The other way you could look at it is when there’s a moment of crisis, and when you need to shake up how the department does its work, you want a steady hand at that moment,” Hinds said.

State Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier said the accident shows a breakdown of procedure at the RMV, but she said it remains to be seen whether Pollack should resign.
