With Massachusetts state Senator Don Humason soon vacating his seat to become mayor of Westfield, two state representatives may run for the job.
Westfield Rep. John Velis, a Democrat, has already launched a bid for the seat. And his House colleague, Nick Boldyga of Southwick, said this week he's thinking about it, too.
Like the outgoing Humason, Boldyga is a Republican. Right now, there are only six (out of 40) in the Senate, and Boldyga said that's too lopsided.
"If there were that many Republicans in control, or that many Democrats, which there are, it's just not good for the voters," Boldyga said. "We need some sort of balance in the legislature."
No date has been set for the special election.
On WGBY, Humason was asked who he'd support if a Velis against Boldyga contest materializes.
"If there was a race, I would let those gentlemen, and whoever else got into the race, battle it out amongst themselves," Humason said. "My focus is going to be on being the new mayor of the city of Westfield."
This month, Humason won a tight mayoral election by 90 votes over Police Captain Michael McCabe. He has spent six years as a state senator, and prior to that, was a state representative for a decade.
As for McCabe, he said this week "there's nothing out there right now" he's interested in running for, but that he's "keeping his options open".
