Michael McCabe says he plans to ask for a recount in the Westfield, Massachusetts, mayoral election after Tuesday's unofficial results put him 97 votes behind Don Humason — out of almost 10,000 total votes.

On election night, both men agreed that neither would declare victory since the margin was so thin.

Although the city clerk said almost all the ballots had been counted, including most absentee ballots, McCabe said it's simply prudent to make sure there were no mistakes.

"It's more work for me [and] unfortunately, it's also more work for City Hall," McCabe said. "But it's part of the election process."

A Westfield police captain, McCabe said he plans to wait until the election is certified before seeking the signatures to formally request a recount.

The vote must be certified within 10 days of the election.

Humason, a state senator, was back working at the legislature in Boston, and could not be reached for comment. But he previously said he knew a recount was possible.
