An official with a homeless shelter in Amherst, Massachusetts, said he's "not feeling extremely hopeful" it will open as usual on November 1.

That's after an executive director and two managers departed this summer.

Gerry Weiss, the president of the board of Craig's Doors, said they need more staff.

"We can't open without more staff than we have," he said. "What we wanted was for the new managers and director to hire the night staff."

Weiss said an opening later in November is more likely. He said he and the board have hired one manager but are still trying to fill the other two positions.

The former employees left after demands they made to the board weren't met as quickly as they wanted.

Among them, they said they the board must develop a clear set of by-laws and a fundraising plan. Weiss said a board member the former employees wanted gone has been replaced.

According to the town manager's office, Craig's Doors is the only homeless shelter in Amherst.
