Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidates Edward Markey, the incumbent Democrat, and Kevin O'Connor, the Republican challenger, will spar Monday night in the only debate currently scheduled ahead of their general election contest.
Monday's one-hour debate is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. on NEPM TV, the NEPM News Network and nepm.org.
O'Connor challenged Markey in early September to debate him seven times between then and the Nov. 3 election, but Markey's camp has said one debate is enough.
"After participating in seven high-profile debates during which he discussed his record of leading and delivering for the people of Massachusetts, Senator Markey looks forward to this final debate of the race with his Republican opponent," Markey campaign head John Walsh said in September.
Markey turned back a primary challenge this year from U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III. O'Connor, a Dover attorney who describes himself as a "common sense candidate," defeated Republican Shiva Ayyadurai in the Sept. 1 primary, but the two Republicans did not debate during that race.
The debate Monday night is moderated by Jim Braude and Margery Eagan of GBH News.
