Winter's Not Releasing Its Icy Grip On New England Just Yet

A weather map including the jet stream.

While the calendar might say it's April, Mother Nature has said otherwise this month.

A wintry weather pattern has been slow to leave the area, making it feel much colder than usual for this time of year.

At Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, the temperature has been about ten degrees below average so far this April.

And there's been about six inches of snow, too -- about five times the normal amount for the entire month.

"The jet stream is actually further south, so we're getting all that cold air still being pulled down from Canada," Lenore Correia with the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts, said. "It just hasn't been moving north. It's really just how the weather pattern has been setting up."

Long-range predictions indicate temperatures may be slightly below normal for the rest of the month. But there's the potential for a few warmer days later this week.
