A company that sells marijuana in Northampton and Brookline, Massachusetts, has been sold.

New England Treatment Access became one of the very first companies to sell recreational pot in the state when its store in Northampton opened in late November.

NETA has agreed to be purchased by a company called Surterra Wellness, which operates medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida and Texas, and sells recreational marijuana in Las Vegas.

With some big players entering the marijuana market, NETA co-founder Kevin Fisher said it can be helpful to have a partner operating on a national scale.

"Surterra has the leadership that can help an organization grow and expand to the kind of scale that would make it tenable in the future in a hotly competitive space," he said.

Fisher declined to say how much the deal is worth.

The state's Cannabis Control Commission would still have to OK the sale.
