Thirty-four people have been arrested after a week-long operation involving local, state and federal law enforcement in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni organized the operation. He said most of those arrested had gang ties, and it became clear that now was the time to act.

"Two particular gangs have had some incidents going back and forth over some months," he said. "There was specific intelligence that increased concerns this was going to play out in a violent way in terms of shooting and other assaults."

Gulluni said a murder earlier this month in Chicopee also motivated him to launch the effort.

He said he expects additional arrests in the coming days and that similar operations could be conducted in the future.
