The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority wants to begin new bus service connecting Amherst, Massachusetts, to Worcester. It would stop in seven towns in between.
Paul Burns-Johnson, the director of transit operations for the PVTA, said the service is aimed at improving transportation options for underserved rural communities.
"It provides the opportunity for folks from this area to access education, to access employment, and just to access medical and other services in larger cities," he said.
Service would start in mid-July, and there would be three round trips each day. The transit authority estimates there would be 9,000 nine riders on board in the first year.
The plan still needs approval from the PVTA Advisory Board and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which would provide a large chunk of the money needed.
