A 39-year-old man was shot to death in Northampton, Massachusetts, Wednesday night. Police have identified him as Joseph Fillio of Pittsfield. The suspect in the shooting appeared in court Thursday afternoon.
Steven J. Malloy is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to a single count of murder.
The shooting took place in a downtown apartment Wednesday night around 11pm, , according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
The homicide is Northampton's first murder of the year, and it's been almost three years since a gun was used in a homicide in the city, according to the DA's office. Assistant District Attorney Matthew Thomas said for now the weapon used is not something to discuss.
“It’s difficult to elevate this [homicide] or not elevate this one beyond a 'loss experience' by the community,” Thomas said.
The DA's office said Malloy is from Springfield, but that his address is listed as “the streets of Northampton.”
The shooting remains under investigation by the Northampton Police Deparment and the Massachusetts State Police.
Malloy’s pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 20th.
