Town officials in Greenfield, Massachusetts, are calling in the state auditor's office after the head of the town's broadband service was fired.

They want state officials to look into the books of Greenfield's semi-independent internet provider, Greenfield Community Energy and Technology.

Greenfield Mayor Bill Martin said Daniel Kelley was fired amid questions raised by town officials about improper spending.

"There were some expenses that were interpreted as not according to municipal finance law," Martin said.

The Greenfield Recorder reported that the questionable expenditures included Christmas decorations and gifts for employees.

A representative from the broadband company referred all questions to the mayor's office.
