College students around the country are finishing the semester in a much different place than they started — many back with their families, in their hometowns — as classes continue online.

This semester, I've been teaching radio journalism at UMass Amherst. Now that we only meet on Zoom, and the options for field reporting are quite limited during the pandemic, I asked my students to record scenes of their lives in lockdown.

They sent in sound from around Massachusetts, from Texas and New Jersey, and as far away as Spain, as they get used to living again with siblings and parents and the slow pace of isolation.

Listen to an edited collection of their stories.

Students featured include: Lyla Hyman, Will Mallas, Emili Van Volkinburg, Katie Scott, Megan Johnson, Ethan Smith, Julian Mendoza, Raul Ameneiro Rodriquez, Matthew Holowitz, Melissa Nieves-Torres and Raaya Alim.
