U.S. Rep. Richard Neal spoke Aug. 23, 2018, at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Massachusetts.

An advocacy group has started running TV ads calling on a western Massachusetts congressman to use his new power as committee chair to get President Trump's tax records.

The group, Need To Impeach, plans to run advertisements focusing on House leaders who chair key investigative and oversight committees. Congressman Richard Neal, a Springfield Democrat, heads the Ways and Means Committee.

Need To Impeach said it will spend over $100,000 on four TV stations in Neal's district, so voters see the ad.

"Neal can subpoena Trump's tax returns and vote to start impeachment hearings against the most lawless and corrupt president in American history," the ad said, in part.

The commercial urges viewers who support impeachment to call Neal's office. The effort is being bankrolled by a billionaire supporter of Democrats named Tom Steyer.

In an email, a spokesman for Neal said the congressman has consistently said he plans to seek Trump's tax returns and will do so in a "judicious, methodical and deliberative manner."
