United States' Ilona Maher celebrates after scoring a try during the women's Pool C Rugby Sevens match between France and the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics, in the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, France, Monday, July 29, 2024.

Ilona Maher - Rugby

Ilona Maher hails from Burlington and played field hockey, softball and basketball for Burlington High School and started playing rugby during her senior year on the South Burlington club rugby team. The sport "immediately started clicking for me," Maher said in an interview with 802 Rugby in 2021.

"One thing that really drew me was that it's the only really full-contact sport for women, and I am a pretty physical person," Maher said.

Maher went on to become a standout rugby player at Norwich University and then Quinnipiac University.

She previously represented the United States in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Maher is also a phenomenon on social media, where her funny and positive posts have built a following of millions of people.

She told Vermont Edition in 2021 that she hopes to use social media to elevate the level of attention on women's rugby.

"Through TikToks, or whatever, they can be exposed to the sport, and think 'Oh, you know, maybe I should try it out,' and then hopefully get more numbers," Maher said.

Elle St. Pierre, of the United States, celebrates after winning the gold medal in the women's 3,000 meters during the World Athletics Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, Saturday, March 2, 2024. St. Pierre will compete in the 1,500-meter event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Elle St. Pierre - Track and field

Elle St. Pierre grew up on a dairy farm in Montgomery. She competed in the women's 1,500-meter event in Tokyo in 2021, placing 10th. She is competing in the same event this year and is considered a serious contender for a medal.

St. Pierre told Vermont Public in 2019 that growing up on a farm helped prepare her for the work required to excel athletically.

"There's a lot of similarities between growing up on a farm and the training that I'm doing — working really hard, and not being afraid to have a little grit," she said. "Those type of things prepared me. Life lessons that I learned on the farm translate well into training and preparing for races like these."
