This week, the highest court in Massachusetts heard arguments about whether Thomas Estes, a district court judge from the western part of the state, should face punishment for an affair with a court employee.
Estes admits to engaging in sexual acts with a female social worker in his courthouse chambers. It will be up to the state legislature to determine whether Estes keeps his job.
Also, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has been in western Massachusetts. She's made an appearance at Mount Holyoke College, and even received the key to the city of Holyoke, where half the population is of Puerto Rican descent. She's been outspoken about the U.S. government's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and was named one of the most influential people for 2018 by Time magazine. While some see her as a hero, for others she is a controversial figure.
Finally, MGM says its Springfield casino will be opening a little earlier than expected, on August 24th. And officials for both MGM and Wynn Boston say there's no deal in the works for MGM to buy the eastern Massachusetts casino project. This is despite earlier reports that the two were negotiating a deal for that yet-to-open casino. And a former Springfield Mayor, Michael Albano, called into question MGM's commitment to Springfield.
