The incorrect notice that Berkshire Gas customers received.

The Berkshire Gas company said it made an error on recent bills that appeared to defy the laws of economics.

The bills, which were mailed in early September, notified customers that the price of natural gas they would have to pay was increasing because the wholesale price the company has to pay was decreasing.

Susan Millerick, who is a spokesperson for Berkshire Gas, said it was a simple mistake.

"In actuality, the price of gas went up about 17% over the last month, and so the bills need to reflect that increase, but we had the wrong words, and instead of saying 'increase' we put 'decrease,'" she said.

Millerick said Berkshire Gas has corrected the electronic versions of bills on its website.

Eversource said its gas customers will also see an increase in the price they pay. The company said supply and demand is causing a rise in gas prices across the Northeast.
