New Episodes of the Word Matters Podcast

First up, on Sept. 2, it’s “‘Scofflaw’: An Invented Word, plus Where’d You Get That ‘Mustache’?” Most of the time, the word you invented won’t make it into the dictionary. Except, on occasion, when it does. Learn the story of one such rule breaker: ‘scofflaw.’ Then, discover all the various shapes and forms the word ‘mustache’ took before shaving itself down to its current spelling.

Next, premiering Sept. 9, listen to “We're Sorry, But Shakespeare Didn't Invent That Word.” One of the most cherished and enduring myths about the English language is that its vocabulary was largely populated through the genius of a single man: William Shakespeare.

New Story Slam from Valley Voices

Valley Voices Story Slam is going virtual this fall, so mix yourself a cocktail, cozy up on your couch, and get ready to for an evening of storytelling on Thursday, Oct. 8, live from the stage at the historic Academy of Music Theatre in downtown Northampton. It didn't take long for Billie Eilish to become one of the biggest pop stars in the world, sweep the Grammy Awards and release the latest James Bond theme. And today, at just 18, she and her brother, Finneas, have accomplished what no one has been able to do for five and a half months — perform a Tiny Desk concert in what certainly appears to be the NPR Music offices. Featuring works by over 50 artists from 17 countries, Breathing While Black is a juried digital visual art exhibition presenting an international response to the recent and ongoing violence perpetuated against Black Americans. The countries represented by exhibiting artists including South Africa, Guyana, Chile, Mauritania, Haiti, Yugoslavia, Iran, Nigeria, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Pakistan, England, Cameroon, India, Togo, Dominican Republic and the United States. The exhibit runs Sept. 1–Nov. 20.

Concerts at Black Birch Vineyard: Chris Smither

Chris Smither is a folk and blues singer who writes lyrically complex songs that offer a commentary on the human condition. Smither is coming to Black Birch Vineyard on Sept. 7, offering two shows, one at 1 p.m. and another at 5 p.m. The outdoor concert will maintain a safe environment by placing groups 8 feet apart and following CDC guidelines.
