Massachusetts Fire Officials: East Mountain Fire 90% Contained

Updated at 5:33 p.m.

A 964-acre brush fire in western Massachusetts is now 90% contained, according to the state.Fire officials have said the East Mountain fire that started in the Clarksburg State Forest on Friday is the largest in more than two decades.

More than 120 firefighters from 19 departments in Massachusetts and Vermont have assisted during the operation, the state said, with a much smaller crew needed Tuesday.

"The firefighters spent the day mopping up hot spots and patrolling the perimeter," Jennifer Mieth, spokesperson for the state Department of Fire Services, said in an interview Tuesday afternoon. "They're looking for places where the fire might still be smoldering and putting that out."

One firefighter was injured over the weekend. A statement Monday said he was in good condition but remained in the hospital.

Officials believe this has been the largest wildland fire in Massachusetts since the Tekoa Mountain fire in Russell, in April 1999.

This report contains information from the Associated Press and NEPM's Nancy Cohen.
