Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and his Democratic opponent, Jay Gonzalez, will not debate in western Massachusetts this election season.

Gonzalez said he's accepted all five invitations he's received to debate: three in the Boston area, and one each in the Springfield area and in Worcester.

Baker only agreed to the Boston debates.

Gonzalez said that's an insult to voters in central and western Massachusetts.

"I think voters in this election deserve debates across this state so they can get the same level of information and be informed about the choices they're making in this race," he said.

A statement from the Baker campaign noted that one of the Boston debates will be with a consortium of news outlets that includes several Springfield TV stations.

This would be the first of Baker's three runs for governor in which he hasn't come to the western part of the state for a debate. NEPR was among a group of news outlets that proposed one in the Springfield area.
