Pondering Hampshire College's Future, And Other News Of The Week

Hampshire College says it's looking for a "strategic partnership" as it faces a tough financial foreceast. Our Short List panel takes a look at that and other news of the week.

Hampshire College officials also said they will decide whether to admit a new class of students this fall by the start of February. These moves have left some current and former students concerned that the character of the college could change.

The Springfield, Massachusetts, City Council voted to overrideMayor Domenic Sarno's veto of a sanctuary ordinance. The measure forbids officials from asking people about their immigration status and prevents police from cooperating with federal immigration authorites in some cases.

Meanwhile in Berkshire County, the first two retail marijuana stores there, in Great Barrington and Pittsfield, are now open for business. They join others in Northampton and Easthampton as those that have opened so far in western Massachusetts.

And finally, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and several lawmakers in both chambers of the legislature filed bills which would legalize sports gambling in the state. Currently, Rhode Island is the only place in New England where it is legal.
