The MGM Springfield casino took in $18.4 million in gambling revenue in August. It was the first full month the resort was open after a lengthy shutdown due to the pandemic.

The number, released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, represents MGM Springfield's lowest revenue for a full month since opening more than two years ago.

However, since the shutdown ended in July, the casino has been operating with limited slot machines and few table games — to encourage social distancing.

Gambling regulators have yet to allow poker, craps and roulette to take place.

The gaming commission says across the state's three casinos, gambling revenue in August was about 83%  what it was a year ago, with only half as many slot machines and table games available.

As for MGM Springfield, its hotel has yet to reopen and not all restaurants on the property are up and running, either.

A few weeks ago, MGM Springfield announcedit was laying off 1,000 employees who were furloughed during the months-long pandemic shutdown.
