A major winter storm may be hitting western Massachusetts, but a COVID-19 mass vaccination site in Springfield is open, and has a plan to accommodate those who can't make it because of the snow.
Roughly 500 people a day, ages 75 and over, are getting the vaccine at the Eastfield Mall in Springfield.
Vaccinations continue to be offered as scheduled through the storm. The state of Massachusetts has contracted with a company called Curative to administer the shots.
Dean Shultis, who is an executive with Curative, said those who miss their appointments because of the weather don't need to worry about rescheduling.
"If the snows prevents people getting here to the site," he said, "they can come Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday during the time that they had scheduled, and we're going to work people through."
Shultis said the Eastfield Mall site will also have extended hours early and late on Thursday and Friday to take care of those who missed their appointments.
He said the goal is to get a 1,000 people vaccinated per day in the near future.
