When Metacomet, a Wampanoag sachem called King Philip, warned his people of the danger to their traditional way of life posed by English colonists, he knew full well the risks of opening hostilities. But he cast the dice, and the resulting conflict was one of the bloodiest in American history. One significant battle began in 1676 with the slaughter of natives at a fishing encampment in Gill and spread into Greenfield. Under the aegis of the National Park Service, archeologists have been tracing the route of the battle for the past five years.
