Deep Listening, the radically inclusive practice developed by Pauline Oliveros, explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. The practice includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance, as well as listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth. This workshop is led by longtime Oliveros collaborator Ben Richter in cooperation with Ghost Ensemble and the Center for Deep Listening.
Card to Culture tickets available.
This workshop is part of Florence Congregational's Practical Spirituality Series, and is preceded by a community potluck! Come at 5:30 to enjoy a potluck meal with neighbors and other workshop participants. It's free, but registration is encouraged so you get additional info ahead of time.

These decorative tins are made to hold reverence for a particular deity or your own loved ones and are designed to be easily carried, allowing individuals to have a personal space for contemplation while on the go.Small metal tins will be provided, but participants may bring one they would prefer to use. In addition, paint, papers, assembly materials, and a few decorative items will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring a few trinkets that “speak” to you to add a personal touch. Cello and Chocolate...does it get any better? Each time we host this event, Jeremy and Dave surprise us with a new theme and new compositions.
Join us for a lovely multi-sensory experience that will feature the (mostly) soothing sounds of the Harman/Haughey Cello Duo paired with the delicious flavors of Ana Bandeira Chocolates of Northampton. Who better to curate both sounds and tastes other than the Valley's favorite cellist/chocolateer Dave Haughey? Dave is both the owner of Ana Bandeira Chocolates as well as a stellar multi-genre cellist who has performed internationally with the Paul Winter Consort and is joined by Jeremy Harman, Artistic Director of the New Directions Cello Festival and professor of cello at the Berklee College of Music.
This event is part soundbath and part concert. Please bring cushions, yoga mats, and blankets to make yourselves comfortable. Naturally, we will also have folding chairs for those who prefer not to sit on the floor.
