Museums and the Theft of African Architecture by Itohan Osayimwese
One of the most pressing concerns in Africanist art and architectural history today is the question of restitution. This talk makes the case for architecture’s place in the debate by analyzing the 1972 theft of sixteen Yoruba veranda columns from the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. This theft, described as a national tragedy, remains unsolved today.
Itohan Osayimwese is Department Chair and Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Brown University.
