For this episode of New England Public Radio’s Jazz Beat, Bill Mays discusses his new book, "Stories of the Road, the Studios, Sidemen & Singers: 55 Years in the Music Biz." Mays is a veteran pianist who’s worked in an amazing variety of settings with scores of musicians. Born in Sacramento, California in 1944, Bill did extensive work in Los Angeles studios for a couple of decades before he moved to New York in 1984. Bill Mays is donating all of the proceeds from sales of the book to the Musicians Fund of the American Federation of Musicians. The book is available exclusively at his website, http://billmays.net

Tom was honored by the Jazz Journalists Association with the Willis Conover-Marian McPartland Award for Career Excellence in Broadcasting in 2019. In addition to hosting Jazz à la Mode since 1984, Tom writes the jazz blog and produces the Jazz Beat podcast at NEPM. He began working in jazz radio in 1977 at WCUW, a community-licensed radio station in Worcester, Massachusetts. Tom holds a bachelor's degree from UMass Amherst, where he majored in English and African American Studies.
