James Young is the Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of English and Judaic Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is also the Founding Director of the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide and Memory Studies at UMASS.
He has consulted on various public memorials around the world including the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin and memorials in Argentina and Norway. In this interview with Ilan Stavans, Professor Young explores memory and how we remember public tragedies.
