On May 8th, Carolyn Kuan, Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, will be one of four recipients of the 10th Annual New England Public Radio Arts and Humanities Awards. Kuan has been music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 2011.

In this preview episode of Presto!, John Nowacki and Kuan discuss making a difference in the region and the current climate in the classical music world for female conductors and composers. Kuan will be featured on the next Presto!, scheduled for May 14, 2018.

Originally from the Midwest, John Nowacki has had an interest in classical music since he was a high school student, having discovered organ music recordings by E. Power Biggs and singing in the high school’s choirs. His radio career began in 1982 at WILL-FM in Champaign-Urbana, Ilinois, where he started as a board operator for local programming, then became a classical music host. He worked for several Illinois stations before making the move to WNPR in 1990.
