Millpond Live Presents Brown Rice Family & Glen David Andrews
Millpond Live has gone virtual for the 2020 season, with two options for catching their concerts. You can purchase a ticket to be part of an interactive Zoom audience, or you can watch free on Facebook, YouTube or the Millpond Live website.
On Saturday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. welcome back the Brown Rice Family, a 2017 Millpond alum. Members of the Brown Rice Family come from Japan, Jamaica, Haiti, Nigeria, South Africa and the United States. Together they create world roots music with a fusion of reggae, latin and funk.
Millpond Live’s final virtual concert of the season, featuring the irrepressible Glen David Andrews, is Saturday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. A native son of New Orleans, Glen is a warrior for cultural preservation in New Orleans.
100 Years of Voting Rights
August 18 marks the centennial anniversary after the passage of the 19th Amendment, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of gender. American Experience tells the dramatic story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.
Worcester Honors Suffrage Anniversary
The City of Worcester is hosting a number of events in honor of 100 years of women’s suffrage, including Madame Secretary Frances Perkins, a one-person show, written and performed by Ann Marie Shea. Francis Perkins, raised and educated in Worcester, was the first woman to serve in a Cabinet of the U.S. Government. The virtual program will be presented on Zoom on Monday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.
Live from the Sanctuary Virtual Recital
The Unitarian Society of Northampton presents their incoming music director, pianist Lemuel Gurtowsky, and the talented mezzo-soprano Natalie Lewis, a rising senior at UMass Amherst, in a live virtual recital of art songs, opera arias, spirituals and jazz on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m.
Joanne Weir Saturday Marathon on the NEPM Create Channel
Enjoy ten back-to-back episodes of Joanne Weir’s Plates and Places on NEPM Create, Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The award-winning show takes you on a journey through the culinary world, exploring destinations, meeting the locals and cooking with world-class chef Joanne Weir, who grew up in Northampton. Although Weir lives in California, she frequently comes home to western Massachusetts to host events such as the NEPM (formerly WGBY) Wine and Food Lovers Weekend!
From the Top Presents an Evening of Classical Guitar
From the Top, which airs Sundays at 3 p.m. on NEPM 88.5 FM, is the NPR show that celebrates the stories, talents, and character of young classically-trained musicians. Catch a virtual concert of classical guitar featuring three From the Top alumni: Eric Wang, 16, from San Jose, California, Gwenyth Aggeler, 17, from Denver, Colorado; and Emilia Diaz Delgado, 11, from Santa Clara, California on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m.
Chester Theatre Offers a Virtual Take on Shakespeare’s King Lear
In their first virtual performance, Chester Theatre presents The Story of King Lear, a 50-minute telling of the Shakespeare classic adapted and directed by Daniel Elihu Kramer. Stage, film and television veteran Michael Potts, known to TV audiences as Brother Mouzone in The Wire, stars as Lear. The show will air Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. and will be available for viewing through Sunday, Aug. 30.
This Season’s Tanglewood Finale
On Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m., NEPM’s summer’s schedule of Tanglewood broadcasts concludes with Tanglewood on Parade, a special three-hour program from 2019 which includes music by Berlioz, Ravel, Wagner, Copland, George Harrison, Pete Townshend and others. Enjoy performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the Boston Pops and other resident ensembles. Following Tanglewood tradition, the program concludes with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.
