The Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued a new deadline for hurricane evacuees from Puerto Rico to sign up for help--June 18.
The United Way is getting the word out locally through its 2-1-1 program to reach those who have yet to register.
“It’s really the first step in starting the process to make sure that any sort of eligibility that someone has for assistance or to help either rebuild their home or to gain assistance in relocating into Connecticut they can access through FEMA,” said Annie Scully, a community outreach coordinator with the United Way of Connecticut.
A FEMA spokesperson has provided some further clarification on the deadline.
“It is important for survivors who have open cases, or ongoing appeals stay in contact with FEMA,” Patricia Crager said. “That case work will continue after June 18, as that is only the deadline for new registrations, it is not a deadline for survivors who are working on their long-term housing plans, filing appeals or keeping FEMA up to date on their mailing address, etc.”
In rare cases, Crager said some new applicants will be able to apply after the deadline if they faced extenuating circumstances that hampered their ability to apply before June 18.
Local evacuees are urged to either call 2-1-1, the FEMA help line directly at 1-800-621-3362, or sign-up online.
