Decades-old allegations of assault at a youth summer camp in the Berkshires are at the center of new criminal charges filed against a former Olympian.

Allegations against Conrad Mainwaring spanned four decades, and were featured in a 2019 ESPN investigation, with dozens of men alleging he sexually abused them. That included some at Camp Greylock for Boys in Becket, Massachusetts, where Mainwaring worked as a counselor in the 1970s.

The charges in Berkshire County – 12 counts of indecent assault and battery on a child – were first announced in February.

Mainwaring, who is 69 years old, was extradited from California last week and appeared in Berkshire Superior Court Tuesday. His attorney entered not guilty pleas, and did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

According to The Berkshire Eagle, Mainwaring appeared in court in a wheelchair, with his attorney saying his client recently had hip surgery.

"These are old allegations from the 1970s," Manuel said, according to the Eagle. "He’s entitled to a full and fair trial."

The judge set bail at $200,000.

Berkshire County District Attorney Andrea Harrington said in a statement she believes there are "many other victims" out there and urged them to speak with law enforcement.

Mainwaring was a hurdler who represented Antigua and Barbuda in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

The current owners of Camp Greylock declined to comment on the charges, through their attorney, Glen Feinberg, who noted they "were children themselves at the time and were not involved with the camp in any way."

The owners purchased the camp property in 1995, according to Feinberg. The company, he said, "has never had any affiliation whatsoever [with] Conrad Mainwaring or any of the campers who say he harmed them."
