Week in review: Smith & Wesson's move, Big E crowds, and more

After nearly 170 years in Springfield, gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson is moving its headquarters and hundreds of jobs to Tennessee. The company said it will move 750 jobs from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Missouri, but will leave about 1,000 jobs in Massachusetts.

Smith & Wesson blamed the move on pending state legislation that would ban the manufacture of certain assault weapons, but the sponsor of that legislation is questioning whether it has more to do with low labor costs in Tennessee.

The annual Big E has set several attendance records this year. The annual fair in West Springfield runs through Sunday. The surge follows the cancellation of the Big E a year ago due to COVID-19.

The Los Angeles-based administrator chosen to become the new leader of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is apparently looking forward to moving to North Adams.

“What it feels like to experience art in this place is unlike anywhere else,” Kristy Edmunds said in a statement. “A whole creative ecosystem exists in North Adams to realize the vision of artists — from inception to monumentally-scaled completion, and everything in between.”

Those are a few of the topics to be analyzed in the review of the week’s news on And Another Thing. Panelists this week are Natalia Muñoz, Mike Dobbs and Larry Parnass.
