The Massachusetts Senate wants the state to examine what renovations may be needed at the Holyoke Soldiers' Home. The facility provides state-funded medical care to veterans. It was established in 1952.
State Senator Don Humason, who represents the second Hampden and Hampshire District, says the care provided is good. But he says the facilities need to be examined to see what may require maintenance, repair or upgrading.
Humason sponsored an amendment, which passed the Senate unanimously, to study exactly what's required.
"We just want to keep our facility in the best shape possible," he said. "There are always needs -- like your own home. You know, trying to keep it air tight, and ship shape, is not always easy. And if you don't keep up with the maintenance, you have problems."
Humason said he expects the Massachusetts House and Governor Charlie Baker will approve the legislation next week.
Both Humason and Baker planned to be at the Soldiers' Home on Friday evening in honor of Veterans Day.
