New England Residents Cope With Heat Wave

A heat advisory is still in effect for much of New England. Health officials urge people to take precautions against the extreme heat.

Springfield, Massachusetts, resident Raylene Figueroa followed this advice.

"Well, I've been staying inside in the AC all day," Figueroa said. "I don't come outside, just to stay cool, you know? And I drink a lot of water."

People with asthma, like Debra Pires of Springfield, are at an even greater risk during a heat wave. Pires has been able to avoid the outdoors, but she worries for others.

"It's terrible, I feel awful for the people who have to work out here," Pires said. "Like the policeman that was doing the traffic, because the heat comes right off the tar. I don't know how he did it all day out here... And these construction guys, I don't know how they do it."

Health officials strongly advise people with jobs outside to work in the early morning or afternoon and take frequent breaks.
