Springfield, Massachusetts, Parking Chief Not Losing Sleep Over Free MGM Parking

The head of the Springfield Parking Authority said he's not nervous about the free parking MGM will offer the public.

As part of its new casino, scheduled to open August 24, MGM said Monday it will offer free parking to customers and the general public in a new garage with 3,400 spots.

Thomas Moore, the interim executive director of the Springfield Parking Authority, said he's not worried about empty spaces in his lots.

"We have a healthy stream of revenue," Moore said. "We project that that's going to continue beyond MGM's opening. If anything, we look at this development for everybody in the downtown community. It's going to be a lot more visitors coming in."

MGM hasn't announced how many spots will be allocated for the public or when the garage will open.
