The Massachusetts state budget has been signed by Gov. Charlie Baker. One thing not included was a policy on immigration.
A state Senate measure called for placing sharp limits on cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration officials. It would have also largely prohibited local law enforcement from inquiring about an individual's immgration status. Lawmakers were unable to reach a compromise on the deal, and some immigration advocacy groups are upset.
Primary election campaigns for many different seats are in full swing. And money has become an issue in one congressional race. Springfield attorney Tahirah Amatul-Wadud is challenging Congressman Richard Neal in the Democratic race. The incumbent holds a heavy fundraising advantage over the political newcomer. And Amatul-Wadud is critizing where some of Neal's money came from.
And Connecticut's bond commission this week approved $10 million for a study into whether the state should bring back tolls on its highways. Outgoing Gov. Dannel Malloy says Connecticut needs the revenue from tolls to fund transportation projects, while some critics says that decision should be left up to the new governor and General Assembly.
