Two hundred security guards at MGM Springfield are scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to unionize. The employees could become affiliated with the Law Enforcement Officers Security.

LEOSU organizer Steve Maritas claimed MGM Springfield security officers aren't receiving raises they're entitled to after 90 days, and that some aren't getting higher salaries for advanced training.

Maritas also accused MGM of hiring what he described as "union busters."

"For the last 20 days, they have been on site and constantly harassing our guys, calling them up to union-busting mandatory meetings, making them sit there and listen to their propaganda," Maritas said.

MGM declined to comment on LEOSU's claims.

MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis said in a statement that the company believes in the right of workers to make a decision on joining a union, and that workers should make an informed decision based on facts.

Disclosure: MGM has purchased underwriting from New England Public Radio publicizing the company's non-gambling activities. The NEPR newsroom operates independently of the station's development department, and editorial decisions are made without regard to any funding relationships.
