It looks like it could be a crowded field for Springfield mayor this election cycle. The deadline to file candidate paperwork was Tuesday.
Five candidates, including incumbent Mayor Domenic Sarno, turned in papers to Springfield's Election Commission, although not all the forms have been certified yet.
Candidate Yolanda Cancel is a community organizer who has worked on policing issues. Her 24-year-old son was shot in the arm earlier this month, but crime is just one of many issues she wants to highlight.
“When I try to say, 'What is at the tippity top of what we need to change,' we can’t just stay with crime,” Cancel said. “Because crime, [and] a lot of the issues, basically overlap with each other: education, no jobs.”
Asked to comment on the coming election at an unrelated event Wednesday, Sarno declined.
Springfield's preliminary election is scheduled for September 10. The top two vote-getters will advance to the November 5 general election.
