Prosecutors said a former slot machine technician stole roughly $22,000 from the MGM Springfield casino.

It was part of Salvado Montalvo, Jr.'s job to test slot machines at MGM. The Massachusetts Attorney General's office said the 54-year-old withdrew nearly $24,000 from the casino cashier — supposedly to use in those tests — but only returned a couple thousand of that.

The AG's office said this was discovered in January after an internal casino audit.

A grand jury indicted Montalvo on charges of larceny and forging his supervisors' signatures to get the cash in the first place.

The AG's office said the West Springfield resident will be arraigned in Hampden Superior Court "at a later date."

Calls to several listed phone numbers matching the defendant's surname in West Springfield went unanswered.

A spokesman for MGM Springfield had no immediate comment. A spokeswoman with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission said regulators "respectfully do not have a comment just yet."

Both the casino and gaming commission assisted in the investigation, according the attorney general's office.
