PFAS Chemicals - Wednesday June 23

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemicals that are just about everywhere. They are usually sprayed as a finish on consumer products or are included in packaging. Evidence suggests that PFAS are not only dangerous for your health, but that they are also very hard to get rid of. A new  bill in the Massachusetts state senate could be one of the most sweeping bans on PFAS in the nation.

Dara Kennedy and Maya Shwayder dive into the science and legislation surrounding PFAS to better understand what’s at stake.

Dr. Laurel Schaider, a Senior Scientist at the Silent Spring Institute, joins us to explain what exactly these chemicals are and how they impact our health.

State Senator Jo Comerford discusses the bill she introduced that would ban PFAS in most consumer products in Massachusetts.

Tim Gray of the Housatonic River Initiative tells us about his fight against the installation of a PCB waste facility near Lee, Massachusetts.
