The Springfield Armory National Historic Site will reopen to visitors on Friday, July 2, after being closed for more than a year.
The COVID-19 pandemic is not what caused the armory to shut its doors. Electrical, mechanical and heating systems needed upgrades.
Kelly Fellner, who is the superintendent of the facility, said many of the changes won't be visible to the public, but they will see repainted walls and refurbished floors.
In addition, she said, "our staff has developed some new exhibits, some timeline exhibits to really set the context. It's over 200 years of history of the workings of the Springfield Armory, and so to be able to set that into context will be, I think, really great for visitors."
Fellner said one exhibit will feature photographs of daily working life at the armory.
She said the historic site will be open Wednesdays through Sundays, and that unvaccinated visitors need to wear masks inside.
