Rick Sullivan, president and CEO of the Economic Development Council, seen in file photo, has issued the organization's support for Enfield, Conn., in its bid to become the second national headquarters for Amazon.

A bid to bring Amazon's second headquarters to Enfield, Connecticut, fell short. The two-state plan was backed by Rick Sullivan, head of the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts.

Sullivan said it's disappointing the proposal did not make Amazon's final list of potential locations, but not surprising.

"We went in realistic in terms of the likelihood of success," Sullivan said Thursday. "I think you can tell by the 20 cities that got short-listed, it's the larger cities across the country and then, obviously Toronto."

Sullivan said the Amazon proposal was a good exercise for the region as it prepares to make pitches to other companies.

The Boston area is the only proposed site in New England to make it to Amazon's final list.

Sullivan said if Boston wins, he hopes the company looks west for some of its other operations.

"You know, if there's a manufacturing component to it, if there's some back-office component to it, if there's some research and development component to it, the strong presence of national-leading colleges and universities out here, the ability develop talent as a pipeline," he said.
