A mosquito in Massachusetts has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis for the first time this year, according to the state Department of Public Health.
The last human case in the state was in 2013.
A couple years of drought in 2014 and 2015 reduced the mosquito populations that spread the virus, but more recent wet weather has increased their numbers.
Catherine Brown, the Massachusetts state epidemiologist, said the positive test is a reminder that the virus is still around.
"After multiple years of really low levels of activity, it's important to keep this in the back of people's minds, so that they can be easily prepared for when the next outbreak starts," Brown said.
The virus is rare in humans, but can be serious and potentially fatal.
Health officials say to use insect repellent, and to repair screens at home. Livestock should be kept indoors at night to avoid mosquito exposure.
