Interim Police Chief Otoniel Reyes speaks to reporters outside Yale New Haven Hospital to provide an update on Capt. Anthony Duff, who was shot Monday night.

A search is underway for the man suspected of shooting a New Haven police captain and fatally shooting another man Monday night.

The New Haven Independent reports Capt. Anthony Duff was off duty, and not in uniform, when he came upon a gunfight shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Dixwell Avenue and confronted the shooter. Duff was shot multiple times.

The identity of the man who was fatally shot has not been released.

Police said the shooter took off on foot and remains at large.

Duff, a public information officer for the department, was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital and was in surgery before midnight. Chief Otoniel Reyes said Duff was stable and “going to be OK.”

Reyes described the shooter as “a black male with long braids, a muscular build, and goatee.” They’re asking anyone with information to call New Haven police at (203) 946-6316.

This post will be updated.
