Wilson's Department Store in Greenfield, Massachusetts, could become the new home of the food co-op in Franklin County.

In November, Wilson's announced it was closing after 137 years in business.

The Franklin Community Co-op on Friday notified members the organization is in talks to move its Green Fields Market into the first floor of Wilson's.

Sarah Kanabay, a spokeswoman for the co-op, said the new location would offer additional square footage.

"There's definitely a sentiment that it would be great to be able to preserve something in that space that is also community-owned, or locally-owned, rather than having it become, like, a big box store, or have it be a chain," she said. "We're very mindful of the ways in which we would be continuing a legacy of it being a Greenfield-owned community store."

In late January, the co-op plans the hold the first in a series of meetings with members about the possible move.
