Annual Meeting of the Agawam Historical Association
featured presentation: Meet John Adams: A Lively and Revolutionary Conversation with America’s Second President
Following the election of officers & directors and a short business meeting, George Baker will transport audience members to the Revolutionary era with his engaging and entertaining portrayal of President John Adams. Wearing historically accurate clothing and performing songs from the period, Baker captures the Massachusetts native’s sharp wit, principled leadership, and deep commitment to the American experiment.
Baker has performed his one-man show of President Adams throughout the country, at venues such as the New York Historical Society, Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, and George H. W. Bush Presidential Library, and was featured on National Public Radio's weekend program, Studio 360.
A lawyer by profession, Baker brings clarity and credibility to Adams’s ideas through a blend of history, music, and storytelling, making Adams feel immediate and human, rather than distant and monumental. The program concludes with time for thoughtful audience questions and conversation.
This event is free and open to the public.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Agawam Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

The Springfield Garden Club will hold its Annual Plant Sale Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 9 am to noon at the Monkey House in Forest Park. Free entry to the plant sale is available at the Trafton Road entrance to Forest Park, 200 Trafton Road, Springfield, MA.A spring tradition and the Club’s major scholarship fundraiser, this is not the kind of plant sale that focuses on re-selling plants from wholesale growers. Except for a few donations from generous area garden centers, these plants are from members’ gardens or have been grown from seed specifically for the sale. This is a major fund raiser for our scholarship program and a lot of fun for club members and our customers alike. We LOVE to talk about the plants we are offering and, with many experienced gardeners and Master Gardeners among us, can offer useful suggestions on which plants to buy or answers to some of your gardening questions. The Springfield Garden Club awards an annual scholarship of at least $2,000 to a graduating high school senior, undergraduate or graduate college student majoring in a full-time plant science or environmental studies program, such as horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, land management or other allied fields. Using proceeds from past plant sales, the club has given out over $80,000 in scholarships to students in the last 30 plus years and we look forward to adding to that this year! For more information on the Springfield Garden Club events go to www.springfieldgardenclubma.org or visit them on Facebook athttps://www.facebook.com/SpringfieldMAGardenClub/
The Agawam Garden Club returns to the grounds of the historic Thomas Smith House for their annual Plant Sale!
The sale will include many annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetable starts, and shrubs, all from members’ gardens, and all priced to sell. Because the plants are grown locally, they are well acclimated to the area’s growing conditions.
Proceeds from the sale help fund the Garden Club’s annual scholarship and other educational programs throughout the year.
The c. 1757 Thomas Smith House and 1920 Delmore Hawthorne Garage will also be open for tours.

Join the Worthington Library for a special author event with Jedediah Berry, whose novel The Naming Song won the 2025 Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction. As part of the library’s monthly book club selection, attendees are invited to read The Naming Song in advance and then gather for a rich conversation with the author. Berry will share a reading from the novel, discuss its imaginative world and central themes, and take questions from the audience in a Q&A to follow.
The Naming Song is a wildly imaginative speculative novel that explores the power and politics of language through the story of an unnamed courier working for an authoritarian Naming Committee. New words become tools of control, and resistance brews among silent radicals and forgotten ghosts in a society where naming is both salvation and erasure. The Naming Song is a thrilling, thought-provoking adventure that fully embraces the beauty and power of what cannot be Named.
This program is sponsored by the Mass Book Awards Speakers Bureau and is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Center for the Book.
JEDEDIAH BERRY is the author of The Naming Song, which won the Massachusetts Book Award for fiction and was a finalist for the LA Times Book Prize. His first novel, The Manual of Detection, won the Crawford Award and the Hammett Prize, and was adapted for broadcast by BBC Radio 4. Together with his partner, writer Emily Houk, he runs Ninepin Press, an independent publisher of fiction, poetry, and games in unusual shapes. He lives in Western Massachusetts.
